Book Launch: 3 August, 6.30 pm, London (UK), Crypt Café and Bookshop, St Martin-in-the-Fields Church, Trafalgar Sq.

On 3rd August at St Martin-in-the-Fields, there will be a book launch for James Alison's new book: Broken Hearts and New Creations: Intimations of a Great Reversal. It is James' latest collection of theological offerings and is permeated with all the brilliance, wit and panache that have made James one of the most recognisable and influential contemporary Catholic writers. In the book James continues to develop the implications f...or theology and religion of the insights of the French literary critic and philosopher Rene Girard, which exposes the violence hidden at the heart of our culture. The evening will conclude with a discussion and interview with James.

The Shape of God’s Affection - John Main Seminar 2010 (Canterbury, UK, 5-8 August)

James Alison will offer something like a refresher course in Basic Christianity reminding us what the Good News about God really is.
He will help us to re-imagine what we mean by the uniqueness of Christ and explore how the Spirit enables us to overcome moralism and make room for a sane and just ecclesial form of life. Borrowing from one of his important mentors, René Girard, he will point to new ways out of the divisions and conflicts in ethical, sexual and social issues which can so distort Christian living. The John Main Seminar is an annual event designed to broaden and deepen the teaching of Christian Meditation. It will bring together meditators from around the world and those who wish to discover the practice for the first time. As well as hearing from our inspiring speaker, participants will come together in the silence of meditation, for workshops and discussions, in times of celebration and informal conversations.

From impossibility to responsibility: developing new narratives for gay catholic living

How are we, together, in our different places, and not minding too much the visible collapse of a certain ecclesiastical structure all around us, going to create “parish”? Going to create communities where we, whose imaginations have so often been paralysed by impossibility, can dare to imagine what might be good and fun for our sisters and brothers, and actually start to create the sort of family values which give genuine glory to God?
